MTG Arena players consistently voice concerns about the game’s economy—often with good reason. Whether you’re a free-to-play enthusiast or a cash spender, there always seems to be room for improvement. With the introduction of mythic packs in the store, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) aims to address an enduring issue by offering a slightly more expensive booster that includes a guaranteed mythic rare.
But does purchasing a mythic pack genuinely address the problem? Are the economic issues of MTG Arena truly resolved?
Let’s jump into this in today’s article.
The Difference Between Mythic and Regular Packs
Opening a mythic pack on MTG Arena guarantees a mythic rare card, in contrast to a standard pack, which has about an 85% chance of containing a normal rare card and a 15% chance of a mythic card. Mythic packs are priced 30% higher, available for 1300 gold or 260 gems, compared to standard packs at 1000 gold or 200 gems. Remember, all the pack rewards you receive while playing MTG Arena will always be standard packs; mythic packs are exclusively available in the Arena store.
For players who purchase many packs or frequently draft on MTG Arena, it’s quite easy to acquire all the rares in a given collection while still missing several mythics. Once you have all the rares from a set, additional packs from that set will substitute normal rares with 20 gems (or 40 for a mythic). WotC identified this issue and began offering mythic packs, so when you’re chasing a particular mythic from a set or aiming for 100% set completion, you virtually always receive a mythic from these packs. If you’re missing 10-15 mythics to complete your collection, consider purchasing an equivalent number of mythic packs from the Arena store.
Mythic Pack Contents
Each mythic pack contains 8 cards: 5 commons, 2 uncommons, and a mythic rare. Regular rare cards are not included in mythic packs. Occasionally, one of the common or uncommon cards might be replaced by its corresponding wildcard. There’s also a 1-in-30 chance that the mythic rare will be replaced by a mythic rare wildcard or a rare wildcard. Like standard packs, mythic packs also feature duplicate protection, ensuring you never receive a card of which you already have four copies, and if you have all the mythics, you’ll either get 40 gems or a rare/mythic rare wildcard.
Standard Pack Contents
Standard Packs contain 8 cards: 5 commons, 2 uncommons, and a rare card. Every eighth standard pack may contain a mythic rare card instead of a regular rare, and there’s a chance that a card of each rarity is transformed into its corresponding wildcard. If you would receive a rare when you already possess four of every rare from that set, you’ll get 20 gems instead, or 40 gems for a mythic.
Which is Better? Mythic or Normal Packs?
In a one-on-one comparison, it’s more advantageous to secure a guaranteed mythic than a rare, but for the price of 10 mythic packs, you could purchase 13 standard packs. This is a crucial consideration in our analysis because you’re receiving more content with 13 standard packs, including more commons, uncommons, vault progression, and wildcard progression (recall that every seven packs opened rewards you with a rare or mythic rare wildcard).
Final Thoughts
Mythic packs were introduced to MTG Arena to tackle a specific problem: the scarcity of mythic cards players would encounter when purchasing standard packs. Since trading or buying singles isn’t an option, even bulk mythics are hard to come by. Typically, players buy and open packs in the hope of securing that elusive mythic rare or wildcard they need.
Currently, mythic packs may not offer great value, and you should prioritize them only when your collection significantly lacks mythics from a specific set.
